Monagas, between mountains and plains

Its name was taken in honor of the founding fathers of the country Jose Tadeo and his brother Jose Gregorio Monagas and it was declared state in the year of 1909.  The state’s geography is very particular and goes from mountainous systems to plains, in addition it counts with a great number of rivers, that is why it has a great fishing potential although it has been taken aside due to the absence of fishing ports.  Its greatest tourist attractive is the “Natural Monument Alexander Humboldt” located in the “National Park El Guácharo” near the town of Caripe and better known like “The Cave of the Guácharo”.  This was the first declared Natural Monument in the country, and it consists of a natural cavern, the greatest of Venezuela, and one of most important of the world.

Maturín is the capital city, it owes its name to the “Maturín Indian Chief”, who faced the conquerors until his death, and it has become one of the main cities of the Venezuelan east due, mainly, to the reactivation of explorations and oil operations in the zone.
