Nueva Esparta, land of pearls and islands

It is the only insular state of Venezuela and it is integrated by three islands: Margarita, Coche and Cubagua, the most important island is the first one because of its increasing tourist and commercial activities (See Margarita section).  The state is located in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, up to the north of the Sucre State, in front of the Peninsula of Araya and takes in a surface of about 1238 ft² which holds almost 400,000 inhabitants. Its capital city is “La Asuncion”, although all of commercial, tourist and social movement is carried out in “Porlamar”, since it counts with an international airport, a ferry system, boats and sailboats.

The importance of Cubagua resides in two reasons: The first one is because it was the first place in all America where petroleum was found, back then used for medicinal purposes; and the second reason is because it was, in addition to the first one, the place that in 1515 started the first human settler in Venezuela until it was completely abandoned because of the exhausting of its pearls. Coche, on the other hand, has a reduced population of only six populated centers which practice the artisan fishing and the salt exploitation.

The relief of the state is composed by vast mountainous bulks, coastal lagoons and plains that descend towards oceanic beaches of great amplitude and white sands which constitute a powerful tourist attraction, in addition of being an ideal place for sport and recreation activities.
